Nicolas Party: Talking Heads - Immersive Sound installation

Date: February 2018
Venue: Modern Art Oxford

Talking Heads was an immersive sound installation created in collaboration with visual artist Nicolas Party and Modern Art Oxford. It was a response by EMPRES  to Nicolas’ Speakers exhibition in early 2018.

The installation used technology buried in Nicolas’ painted head sculptures to create an immersive sound field and narrative. Both pieces aimed to celebrate the wide-ranging history of women’s contributions to academic life, and social and artistic communities in Oxford.

It featured differing perspectives recorded across the city, woven with fragments of sound and musical textures, the piece was designed to evolve over the course of the installation, producing an ever-changing auditory landscape. It transitioned from moments of ambient calm and beauty to intricacy and chaos.

With voice contributions from Professor Mary Beard, the first female Emeritus Professor of Music Susan Wollenberg, the Hurst St Press and Jackdaws FC.

A short film about the project..
