The University of Oxford’s EMPRES collective collaborate with the Modern Art Oxford and SONCITIES to present an evening of experimental performance, electronic music, sound art, film, conversation, and movement, curated in response to Carey Young’s Appearance Exhibition.

Featuring:

dry run no.1 (2023) by Anouk Albrecht (composition and interface and interaction design) and Elise Ludinard (choreography and movement).

The collaboration between Elise Ludinard, a dancer from Brussels, and Anouk Albrecht, a sound artist based in Nuremberg, experiments with the interplay of speed and a triggering of sound, additively exploring the space around the moving body. Radio microphones attached to the dancer continuously transmit audio signals to a mixing console, where they are mixed live. The performers navigate the sonic environments of the various body parts, which periodically become entangled in feedback and begin to structure the space. Sound becomes a kind of location determination in a constant negotiating between technology and physicality.

Shortwave Collective

Shortwave Collective, an international feminist artist group who work with creative uses of radio, hosted a DIY radio making and urban listening workshop in April with Oxford Music and Fine Art students. With this new tool to access the electromagnetic spectrum, the students composed new sound works, and both the radios and the compositions will be exhibited throughout the evening.

During the event Professor Gascia Ouzounian will be in conversation with the Shortwave Collective to discuss the project and their work.

Zack Di Lello – Spill

What do global environmental disasters and data leaks have in common? We are about to find out. SPILL is a sound, video, and performance piece exploring online security and its capitalist real-world analogs through the everyday mundane tasks of a below-averagely motivated employee whose job is to parse stolen data and assess the efficacy of cyber threats that his company is constantly posing. Zack Di Lello is a musician who composes music that is sometimes serious, often humorous, occasionally theatrical, always experimental, and potentially dangerous. Zack is currently pursuing a masters in composition at Oxford University, with Professor Jennifer Walsh.

Plus, performances and media art from Oxford music and fine arts students; Antonia Jameson, Will Lowry, Eve Caston, Ynyr Pritchard and the VECtor improv group.
